1.30.07 Mile Intervals

Tuesday, January 30th, 2007
9.5 miles (2.5 mile warmup, 1 mile cooldown 6X1 mile intervals)
m1=6.12, m2=6.04 m3=6.10 m4=6.01 m5=6.14 m6=6.08
Today was my first attempt at adding speed work to my schedule. I can definitely see why it’s important to practice running fast. I felt like a train wreck as I was trying to run the intervals at high effort this morning. I opted to run on the trail instead of going to the track. I picked a section of the trail that had decent lighting, but it still seemed pretty dark when I was trying to run fast. I took 1 minute rest breaks between each interval, which was just barely enough to catch my breath. Mostly though, it just felt really awkward - my shoulders were tight, my feet were crashing, and my legs were flailing. I think I may have been trying to run these too fast. It’s hard to estimate effort after so many miles at 8 minute/mile pace - especially when it’s too dark to look at the watch. I think it was a decent workout. I was really tired by the last interval (I was really feeling this in my hamstrings and gluts), but I was not as tired after the workout as I have been after the 14 mile fartlek workouts that I have been doing on Tuesdays. I hope that with practice, I’ll get better at running fast. I’ll try again next week.

beetles are cool

a poem by eli granger
beetlesRcool My 6 year old son left me this poem on the white-board in my office yesterday afternoon. Since the picture is difficult to read, I’ll translate the artist’s work:

Eli’s poem
beetles are cool
beetles are cool
they don’t smash even if you try to
well, sometimes they do
the end

I think it’s pretty philosophical, a metaphor for life. Sometimes we feel invincible; sometimes we can’t deny our vulnerabilities.
