I’m still tired and dragging a bit. I think I’m coming down with another summer cold, which is likely the reason. My immune system is horrible since I started distance training. I suspect that MORE sleep is the answer to this problem - I’m just not sure how to fit it in. I was reading Paul Greer’s Blog this morning about marathon effects on the immune system. His checklist for avoiding immune system depletion included: 1. Keep other life stresses to a minimum. 2. Eat a well-balanced diet. 3. Obtain adequate sleep. 4. Avoid putting hands to eyes and nose. 5. Avoid sick people and large crowds. 6. Avoid overtraining and rapid weight loss. 7. Use carbohydrates beverages before, during and after marathon races and long training runs. That seems pretty obvious, but I know that there are at least a couple of things on this list that I need to work on. I was also looking for information about the effects of Vitamin C on the immune system. This is a debate that seems to toggle back and forth, but it did seem that the most compelling studies were conducted using subjects that were engaging in some form of strenuous exercise - in which case Vitamin C did appear to have a positive effect. I don’t know if it does or not, but I’m tired of colds and figure it can’t hurt - I’m going to start taking Vitamin C supplements at least on my hard workout days. Anything to give my immune system a little boost would be greatly welcomed. Workout:

Keith, I’m no nutrionist, but I did stay in a Holiday Inn Express once so I’m an expert on this. Vitamin C is a water soluable vitamin and the body absorbs what it needs and excretes (polite for pisses) out the rest. In the Chris Carmichael book chapter about vitamins/minerals, he is a big proponent of big doses of “c”. I have talked to a dietician at work and they say that the amount of “c” one would have to ingest to be toxic (like more than the body can process) would be absolutely massive and not very likely. Therefore, speaking for me, I take a nightly multi-vitamin that has quite a bit of “c” but I also take a 500mg tablet of extra “c” at the same time and look at me (twitch) I’m fine. Actually, I’ve had one cold in January that lasted about 5 days and that’s been it for the last year. I’ve been doing the vitamins for about 9 months. (I also take a calcium supplement in the AM, and eat a yogurt at lunch, and get calcium with my multi-vitamin for a 100% of the daily allowance…since my stress fracture, I figure it can’t hurt). Anywho, feeling great…and I work in hospital…and have small children.
