1.20.07 Long Run Wenatchee Loop Trail

I still have a nagging pain in my left SI joint. I read an interesting article in the New York times the other day by Gina Kolata titled: When It’s O.K. to Run Hurt. Basically it says what most of us have already discovered, but doctors are just starting to admit, movement encourages healing. I tend to over do “movement” when I’m trying to run through an injury, but more often than not, if I cut back on mileage and intensity I can run through annoying little pains.
Last fall, in the early miles of what was supposed to be a 20-mile run, my left foot quite suddenly ballooned. It swelled so quickly, that I was seriously looking around for the snake or insect that had just bitten me. I had to sit and wait for the swelling to go down enough so that I could get my shoe back on to walk the 4 miles back to where I had parked my truck. I made an appointment with my physician because I was positive that I had stress fractured my 5th metatarsal. He quickly ruled out a stress fracture in favor of a soft tissue injury, and then surprised me by saying “if it was me, I would probably run through it”. “What!?!” I said. “You should find a new doctor.” My wife said. Followed by “this guy sounds like just another crazy runner.” I knew then that I had found the right doctor for me.
My friend Joe, who is a physical therapist, also believes in the healing power of movement and has explained to me the biological processes of this on more than one occasion. But, he’ll cringe when he reads this post because he knows me too well. And, he’s been there more than once to put me back together when I tried to run through something with less than stellar results. I don’t like to admit defeat, and sometimes hurt myself by forcing the healing process. I should also mention that Joe doesn’t agree with my 7 days/week plan or my need to run 80 miles/week. Joe’s a pretty smart guy. So, no matter what, don’t take any advice from me!

That “Joe” guy sounds really smart! I wonder if it is all smoke and mirrors, though
